Engineering Apprenticeships with HETA
HETA is the Humber's dedicated engineering apprenticeship provider, placing hundreds of apprentices a year with local manufacturers, process plants and marine engineering firms. Here's how the route works.

The Humberside Engineering Training Association is the area’s dedicated engineering apprenticeship provider, and it sits at the centre of how local manufacturers, process plants and marine engineering firms recruit and train their next generation of technicians.
What HETA actually does
HETA is not a general college offering engineering as one of many subjects. It is built specifically around engineering apprenticeships, and it works as a broker and trainer between local employers and the young people (and, increasingly, adult career-changers) who want to get into the trade. HETA partners with more than 400 companies, around 90% of them based in the Humber area, and between them these employers and HETA train roughly 600 Level 3 engineering apprentices every year.
That scale matters. It means HETA has relationships with a genuinely wide spread of local industry, from large process and chemical sites through to smaller precision engineering firms, marine workshops and manufacturing companies. An apprentice isn’t just enrolled on a course; they’re employed by one of these partner companies from day one, with HETA providing the structured off-the-job training that sits alongside on-the-job experience.
Where HETA apprentices end up working
Because HETA’s employer network spans so much of the region’s industrial base, its apprentices feed into several of the Humber’s core sectors:
- Chemicals and process engineering — sites processing and manufacturing chemicals, fuels and related products, where instrumentation, process and maintenance engineering skills are in constant demand. This breadth is one of the practical advantages of training through HETA rather than applying to a single company’s own scheme: apprentices train within a strong engineering cohort and gain a qualification that is recognised and portable across the sector, rather than being tied to the specific processes of one employer.
What a Level 3 engineering apprenticeship involves
A typical Level 3 engineering apprenticeship through HETA runs around three to four years, combining:
- Structured training in core engineering principles, workshop skills and safety, usually concentrated in the earlier part of the programme.
- On-the-job experience with the employer, where the apprentice progressively takes on real maintenance, process or manufacturing work under supervision.
- Underpinning qualifications, working toward recognised engineering standards that sit alongside practical competence assessments.
- End-point assessment, the final stage where the apprentice demonstrates their skills against the full apprenticeship standard.
Entry requirements are set by the employer rather than by HETA itself, so they vary somewhat, but most Level 3 routes expect GCSEs including maths, English and a science or technology subject. Applying for a HETA-linked apprenticeship generally means applying to a specific employer’s vacancy rather than to HETA as a standalone college place, since the apprentice is employed by the company from the outset. In practice that means:
- Checking HETA’s own vacancy listings and partner employer pages for live opportunities.
- Also monitoring GOV.UK’s Find an Apprenticeship service, where Humber-based engineering vacancies are regularly posted alongside opportunities from other providers.
- Applying early. Engineering apprenticeship intakes are often planned around the academic year, so vacancies can open several months before a September start.
A well-prepared application matters more than people expect at this level.
