Marine & Offshore Engineering Careers in the Humber

From welding and fabrication yards to ROV control rooms and naval architecture offices, the Humber's marine and offshore engineering sector runs quietly behind the estuary's bigger energy headlines — and it needs skilled people at every level.

The Humber estuary is best known these days for offshore wind, but underneath that headline sits an older and quietly essential industry: the network of yards, workshops, vessel operators and engineering firms that build, maintain and supply the region’s ports, ships and offshore structures. This is marine and offshore engineering, and on the Humber it stretches from traditional shipping and fabrication work through to the specialist subsea and cabling trades that the renewables boom now depends on.

Why this sector matters in the Humber

The Humber has been a working estuary for shipping, fishing and marine trade for generations, and that history left behind a dense cluster of engineering, fabrication and marine services firms on both banks. In 2022, the sector’s main industry network, Team Humber Marine Alliance, merged with the Grimsby Renewables Partnership to form Humber Marine and Renewables — a single body now representing more than 200 member firms across shipping, marine engineering and the wider offshore supply chain. The name change reflects reality on the ground: the same welders, fabricators and vessel crews who once served fishing boats and cargo ships now increasingly work on wind farm foundations, cabling and crew transfer vessels too.

A fabrication yard might be building components for a port structure one month and offshore wind substructures the next. Typical roles and what they pay

Marine and offshore engineering covers a wide span of trades and professions, from hands-on fabrication through to design and project coordination. Pay varies considerably with experience, qualifications and whether work is onshore, offshore or rotational.

  • Marine Engineer — keeps vessels, workboats and marine plant running, covering mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems. Typically around £28,000–£45,000 or more depending on experience and vessel type, with sea-going or offshore roles often paying at the higher end.
  • Fabricator/Welder — builds and repairs steel structures, vessel components and offshore substructures. Typically around £26,000–£38,000, rising with coded welding qualifications (such as coded plate or pipe welding) and offshore project work.
  • ROV Technician — operates and maintains remotely operated vehicles used for underwater inspection, survey and subsea construction work. Typically around £30,000–£50,000 or more, with offshore rotational allowances pushing earnings higher for experienced technicians.
  • Naval Architect — designs and assesses the structural performance, stability and safety of vessels and marine structures. Typically around £30,000–£50,000 or more for experienced professionals, usually office- or design-based rather than hands-on.
  • Supply Chain Coordinator — manages the flow of parts, materials and logistics that keep marine and fabrication projects on schedule. Typically around £24,000–£35,000 depending on seniority, and often a good entry point for people with an organisational or logistics background rather than a technical one.

Day to day, this can mean anything from welding steel plate in a fabrication shed, to piloting an ROV from a control cabin on a support vessel, to coordinating deliveries of parts between suppliers and a shipyard, to running structural calculations at a desk. It’s a sector where practical trades and technical professions sit side by side.

How to get in

There is no single route into marine and offshore engineering, and that’s part of its appeal — people arrive from apprenticeships, from other trades, from engineering degrees and from career changes.

  1. Apprenticeship route. A Level 2 or 3 engineering or welding apprenticeship is the most common entry point for fabrication, welding and marine engineering trades. HETA (Humberside Engineering Training Association) is the region’s main engineering apprenticeship provider, working with more than 400 companies (around 90% of them based in the Humber) and taking on roughly 600 Level 3 engineering apprentices a year.   2. Degree or degree apprenticeship.   3. Direct entry and trade transfer. Experienced welders, fitters, electricians and mechanical engineers from other industries frequently move into marine and offshore fabrication work, often needing to add coded welding certificates or offshore safety training rather than retrain from scratch.   4. Supply chain and support roles. Not every job in this sector is a technical trade — supply chain, logistics, planning and administrative roles keep fabrication yards and marine projects moving, and these are often more accessible to career changers with transferable organisational skills.

Key employers to know

Because Humber Marine and Renewables is a network of 200+ member firms rather than a single employer, the sector doesn’t have one dominant name the way some Humber industries do — it’s a fragmented landscape of specialist fabrication yards, marine engineering firms, vessel operators and subsea contractors spread across Hull, Grimsby, Immingham and the wider estuary. That fragmentation is worth understanding before you start job-hunting: rather than applying to one or two major employers, expect to research a range of smaller and mid-sized firms, many of which recruit through local networks, word of mouth and direct applications rather than large-scale graduate schemes.

The sector’s close ties to the port and renewables sectors mean it’s also worth looking at ABP’s Humber operations, whose port infrastructure work sustains demand for marine engineering and fabrication skills, and at the offshore wind and renewables employers whose foundations, cabling and vessel work overlaps directly with the marine supply chain. Questions people ask

Is marine engineering the same as being a ship's engineer at sea?

Not necessarily. Some marine engineers do go to sea, keeping vessels running on long rotations, but a large share of Humber marine engineering work is land-based — in fabrication yards, workshops and offices supporting vessels, offshore structures and the renewables supply chain rather than sailing on them.

Do I need a degree to get into marine or offshore engineering?

No. Many people start through a Level 2 or 3 engineering or welding apprenticeship and build up from there, gaining coded qualifications and specialist tickets on the job.
